About the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre

Our Mission

The Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre (SRSC) is dedicated to researching, collecting, preserving, and sharing the history and legacy of the Shingwauk Indian Residential School and other residential schools across Turtle Island. The work of the SRSC is guided by the principles of truth-telling, healing, and reconciliation, in partnership with Survivors, their families, and Indigenous communities.

Who We Are

Located on the site of the former Shingwauk Indian Residential School, the SRSC is a collaboration between the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association and Algoma University.

The SRSC emerged from decades of advocacy by Survivors, particularly the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association, who sought to preserve the history of the Shingwauk Indian Residential School and support healing.

Our Work

The SRSC is home to an extensive collection of archival materials, oral histories, photographs, and documents related to residential schools. Our initiatives focus on:

  • Archives & Research – Providing access to historical records and fostering community based research.
  • Truth & Reconciliation Efforts – Supporting Survivors and communities in telling their stories.
  • Public Education & Exhibits – Offering museum-style exhibits, educational programming, and resources to raise awareness about the residential school system.
  • Community Engagement – Partnering with Indigenous communities to ensure their histories and perspectives are represented.
